(Checklist + Video) What To Look For When Buying A Second Hand Engine

When buying a second hand engine its important to know what to look for to make sure you’re making a good investment. Before you even get to the inspection stage, it’s a good idea to choose your source well.

Best place to buy used engines

If you need an engine that will last and won’t have you forking out another few thousand dollars for another one sooner than you could say ‘crappy engine’, I advise you to buy from engine wholesalers. Engine wholesalers or importers specialize in searching for, hand picking and testing each and every engine before offering it for sale. (I know that’s our process anyway.) Most also offer warranties.

Buying anywhere else is risky.

Complete or Disassembled?

It’s also a good idea to buy an engine that is complete and not disassembled into various parts. You will have a better chance of detecting any issues with a complete engine when everything is attached where it should be. It also allows you to complete a run/bench test on manual pump engines.

What to look for and how to test it before you buy

There are things you can do yourself to check the engine before handing over your hard earned cash.

The easiest way to check the quality of the engine is to follow the same checking and testing process we follow with all of our imported engines for sale. Below is a simple checklist for you to follow.

Checklist of what to look for when potentially buying a complete used engine.

Printable Used Engine Health Test Checklist What to look for when buying a second hand engine

Download the printable checklist here: Printable Used Engine Health Test Checklist or keep reading to find the same process we follow on all our engines.

*Note: If you are purchasing a used engine from us, you don’t need to go through this process. Our engine specialist has already completed it for you on all our engines, twice!

Visual Checks

  • Water Hoses & Jackets -If they look rusty this may be because of lost coolant caused by a blown head gasket. You don’t want this.
  • Oil Filler Cap – Make sure it locks into place and feels sturdy.
  • Oil Quality – Check the oil itself. If its black and sludgy, it hasn’t been changed often enough and you may want to reconsider buying the engine. If it’s brown, it’ll need an oil change soon. If its mocha or slightly white, this is a sign of a broken head gasket where coolant has been leaking into the oil.
  • Inspect Spark Plugs – Healthy spark plugs should be brown/tan in colour. Not black and not light tan-white. Oil on the plugs can indicate a problem with the piston rings.
  • Exhaust Manifold – Here you are looking for oil sediment. You don’t want to find any.
  • Connection Hoses & Wiring – Have a look all around it and check that all connection hoses and wiring are complete and in good condition.
  • Electrodes & Insulators – If these are damaged, destroyed, melted or missing, don’t buy the engine. It is an indication of sever engine damage.

Run/Bench Test (Manual Pump Engines Only)

Keep in mind that with Electronic Fuel Pump engines you won’t be able to do a run the engine outside of the car.

  • Compression Test – Using a compression tester test the compressions of the cylinders when they are running. If you are experienced, you may be able to tell if the compression is good without a tester but by just running the engine. Keep in mind a cold engine will have less compression than a warm engine.
  • Leaks – Also while the engine is running, make sure there are no oil or water leaks.
  • Sound – When the engine is running try to listen for any unusual rattling or knocking sounds as this may be an indicator that parts have come loose or are rubbing somewhere.
  • Turbocharger (if applicable) –Inspect the turbine for a broken compression shaft or damaged wheel.

Quick demo video

Check out the quick video demonstration below from our engine specialist Rupert testing a KIA 2900 to see how to go about the checking process on an electronic fuel pump engine.  The same process can be done on a manual pump engine but with the addition of a run/bench test mentioned above.

How can I tell the Mileage on a used engine?

I’m so glad you asked. Find out here in our previous blog.

If you’re currently looking to buy a second hand engine you can trust to be of good quality, check out our range that have already gone through the health testing process twice!

how to tell how many kms are on a used car engine | Engine City Imports Nth Bris

Can You Find How Many Kms On A Used Engine?

We’re often asked “what are the kms on the engine?” and the truth is, we don’t know – and there really is no way of knowing. This may be contrary to what you’ve been told by other used engine wholesalers, so let me explain.

Engines don’t count mileage. Odometers do.

Once an engine is taken out of a car to be re-sold, there is no way of knowing how many kms are on the used engine. The reason is simple: Mileage information isn’t stored within the engine component.

The only way to know for sure would be if odometer readings from the original car are kept with the engine records and depending on where you source your engines from, sometimes that’s just not feasible.

We are always honest and upfront with our customers about what we do and don’t know about the history of our used engines. If we know the details of the car the engine was from, we will let you know. Otherwise, we have a thorough process in place to ensure we only source good quality engines.

Further, with our 30+ years experience working with engines and completing our thorough testing process not once but twice – 1. at the suppliers when hand picking our stock and 2. again when they arrive in our shed – we’re able to indicate that mileage is not high. All engines are in top condition.

How Can You Tell If Kms Are High?

A good way to tell is by checking the compression of each cylinder as well as looking for any oil or dirt build up on the outside and in the valves.

For a more detailed explanation of how to check the health of  a used car engine before buying it, see our other blog.

We will only choose engines that pass with flying colours and while we can’t give you an exact kilometre reading, you can trust our fool proof testing process and transparency.

Toyota Landcruiser front half cut for sale
Toyota Landcruiser 1HDFTE front half cut

Half Cuts – SOLD OUT

From time to time we are able to get some good quality front half cut cars – like this Toyota Landcruiser 1HDFTE or the Mazda RX 7’s we had a while back. Ask us if you’re in need of a half cut in any of the makes listed above. We may be able to source a good one for you in our next trip overseas.

Not sure why you’d need a Half Cut over a simple engine? Here’s why it may be more beneficial to your needs…

Half Cut Cars | Engine Conversions | Used Car Engines | Engine City Imports

Why Buy A Half Cut Car

Buying a half cut import – a ‘half cut’ or ‘front cut’ as they’re commonly called – has many benefits for those wanting to do an engine transplant or conversion. A Half cut is your ‘Plug & Play’ solution to engine conversions. No need to fuss around with fiddly cut wiring connections as it all comes with the half cut.

“But is it economical? Or should I just buy a used car engine which is lighter and easier to transport?” you might ask.

Good questions. And the answer is:  It depends on what you need and what you have access to.

Click here to view our current stock list including Front Half Cut Cars.

The Benefits of Buying A Half Cut Import

As mentioned they are the easy ‘Plug & Play’ solution for engine conversions because you get everything you need for the engine transplant in the one purchase including all your wiring connections, radiator and more.

Second hand half cut cars are more economical if you also need to replace the components connected to the engine. You may also need other parts like suspension, drive lines, brakes, cooling system and more which also come with a half cut import.

When buying a front cut you get all the auto parts in that half of the car.

The majority of front half cuts available include;

  • Engine
  • Power Steering
  • Gearbox (and Driveshafts in 4WD)
  • Air Conditioning Set UP
  • Pedal Box
  • Dashboard and Switchgear
  • Radiator including Intercooler, Oil Cooler, Air Condenser
  • Complete Steering System including Hydraulic or Electric Power Assistance and usually the Steering Wheel
  • Complete Engine Bay Wiring Loom
  • Front Suspension
  • Brakes
  • Exterior Lights
  • Bumper
  • Complete and Assembled Underbody – valuable!

The reason it’s cheaper to buy a half cut than each individual component is because you are also paying for the wreckers’ time. It takes far less time for the wrecker to saw a car in half and ship for sale, than to carefully take all the components apart and sell individually.

You will of course be paying larger shipping costs for a larger item. Although if you went down the engine pathway, you may need to buy separate components from multiple suppliers requiring you to pay multiple shipping costs which will quickly add up. So its worth calculating.

If you happen to be transplanting a larger, more powerful engine into your car, buying a half cut will also supply you with the larger front brakes to match.

If you don’t happen to need these second hand car parts for your current project, you can always sell them (as long as they are in good working order) to offset the cost of the half cut.

Things to Consider When Buying A Half Cut Import

They are big and very heavy!

You will need to make sure you have the space available to store your half cut and the right equipment to help you transport and lift it.

To give you an idea, our Mazda RX-7 half cuts weigh approximately 700 kilograms each, are 1.7 metres wide, 2 metres long and 1 metre high. To successfully pull apart the car and get into all the nooks and crannies to get the parts you need, you will require a forklift or engine crane to easily manoeuvre it once in your workshop.

The best thing about buying an Engine City Imports half cut is that we freight it directly to you (additional quote supplied) so you don’t have to worry about finding a trailer big enough to transport it safely to your work space, or in some cases hire an expensive crane truck.

We also recommend that when purchasing a half cut from anywhere else that you research the car you are buying first (if different to your own) as some make and models have parts in different areas of the car and therefor may not be included in a front cut. If you are unsure of what may be included in our Mazda RX7 half cuts feel free to ask us.

At Engine City Imports, engines are our specialty. So if you are considering purchasing one of our Japanese half cut imports – due to arrive in approx 2 months – it is important to note that while they may come with many other second hand parts and components, we cannot guarantee the quality of the additional parts not included in an engine conversion.

The Findings

If you want an easy engine transplant complete with all the bits and bobs for a relatively simple ‘Plug & Play’ approach, have the equipment needed to move the half cut and can make use of (or even sell off) additional second hand car parts, then a half cut is a good solution for you.

Although if you have done a few engine conversions and have no issues with the re-wiring process involved, but don’t have a lot of space or access to essential warehouse equipment and only require the engine itself, then a used car engine would be best for you.

We hope this information has been helpful to you! If you still have questions, feel free to call our Engine Specialist on 3282 2995.
